YOUR VISIT AT A GLANCE
Faro is more than the arrival airport for the Algarve. Its walled old town, cathedral and lagoon make it worth a stay of its own. It also works as a starting point for the central and eastern Algarve, while destinations further west require a longer transfer.
BEYOND THE ARRIVAL
An Algarve city with a lagoon on its doorstep
Faro offers a different Algarve from the resort strip. Inside the old walls, Vila Adentro brings together quiet streets, civic buildings and the cathedral area. The Arco da Vila marks a natural entrance to this compact historic quarter. It is a manageable introduction to the city before continuing towards the marina.
The Ria Formosa changes the geography of a beach day. Lagoons and barrier islands separate parts of the shoreline from the open sea, and some destinations require a boat. That makes Faro a useful base for nature and waterfront time, but an island outing needs more planning than a simple walk from the centre to a beach.
Arco da VilaPlaces worth exploring

Ria Formosa
The protected lagoon landscape offers a different Algarve from the busy beaches. Boat trips and island visits depend on departure points, weather and the time available.

Faro Cathedral
Visit the cathedral in Faro’s walled old town and explore the surrounding squares on foot. It is a compact cultural stop before or after time by the lagoon.

Faro Airport
Faro is the principal air gateway to the Algarve. It suits Faro itself and resorts across the region, with the final road distance depending on whether you continue east or west. The airport is close to the city and the Ria Formosa lagoon.
Indicative road journeys. The terminal, final address and traffic affect the time. Dotted ends link the road to the marked place; this overview is not a navigation map.
Your onward journey
The airport is convenient for Faro itself and also serves a much wider part of the Algarve. Tell us whether your destination is the old town, a golf area or another coastal town. For an island, arrange the road transfer to the correct embarkation point and check the boat connection separately.
Plan around your final address
A short drive to Faro should not be mistaken for the transfer time to the whole Algarve. Golf equipment and family luggage should be included when choosing the aircraft and car.

When to travel
Summer brings beach traffic across the Algarve. Spring and autumn offer comfortable conditions for exploring the town and lagoon; wildlife sightings remain seasonal and cannot be guaranteed.
Spring & autumn
Build a visit around the old town and the lagoon landscape. Outdoor time can be combined with a city lunch or museum stop, without making every day dependent on beach weather.
Summer
Book the onward vehicle with the full group and luggage in mind. For a boat day, confirm the return crossing before arranging the flight home; the airport transfer begins only after you are back on land.
Winter
A quieter city visit can focus on heritage and the natural setting. Check excursions and boat services for your actual date, since a summer programme cannot simply be reused throughout the year.
CONNECT YOUR JOURNEY
Plan the journey in both directions

Before your visit

No. Some island destinations involve a boat crossing. Confirm the beach or island name first, then connect the airport transfer to the appropriate pier rather than to a generic city-centre address.
